The aptly named Boy Scout Troop 501 did their part to help rabid fans while away the remaining days prior to the launch of TFA in the best way possible, hosting a weekend-long event that brought together various scoundrels and nerf herders, Jedi and Sith, and at least one guy in a DIY Wampa costume, to celebrate the galaxy far, far away we all love so much.
Held in Woodbridge, Va.’s Freedom High School, the two-day gathering acted as a mini-Celebration, with activities ranging from saber fighting demonstrations from the local fencing academy to multiple costume contests for various ages and for solo (pun intended) and group entries.

With activities aplenty for the kids ranging from SW themed ring toss to X-Wing miniature games, the highlight for Younglings arguably was the Galactic Academy’s Children’s Area, where one could build their own Mando Merc armor, lightsaber or themed snowflakes. For the slightly older in age (because all SW fans are kids at heart, right?), there were vendors aplenty, as well as charitable tables to help the needier families in this sector. Since no SW event would be complete without a visit from the 501st itself, they naturally were invited, too, and came out in full regalia. While the crowd ebbed and flowed in the few hours I attended, there always was at least one fan there in costume, the true test of a successful fan event for me. The Force is very much with Troop 501.
